The modern man may be proud of the progress he is making in every sphere of life but this he is achieving at a great price. The fresh air and pure water which we were used to getting are polluted now. This is all because of negligence and carelessness. The increasing number of factories and industries is the one major source that is causing all e kinds of pollution, that is, water, air, and noise. The waste products of these factories go into the canals and rivers through pipelines and otherwise, thus making their water toxic and unfit for use. Smoke coming out of the chimneys of factories makes the air full of dangerous gases, and the noise of the machines and sirens creates noise pollution. Countries in the West are taking the problem seriously but in India, no strong measures have been taken to tackle this problem. The harmful effects of these pollutions will prove disastrous to the coming generations. Another main thing that exploits nature and pollutes it is the cutting down of trees. It affects almost everything directly or indirectly. When there would be no trees, it would not be possible to hold the soil. Due to soil erosion, the fertile soil would flow down with rain water making the fields barren. Lesser trees would result in lesser fruits and lesser paper products and so on. Photosynthesis by the trees keeps the carbon dioxide – oxygen balance but due to cutting off trees would be disturbed, thus polluting the air we breathe in. Deforestation also prevents rain from falling and this would affect agricultural production. The use of artificial fertilizers for boosting food production also causes contamination of air and water. It also leads to food contamination. There is one more serious problem related to pollution. The excess of chloro – fluoro – carbons in the air leads to the depletion of the ozone layer which protects the earth from the ultraviolet radiations of the sun. An increasing number of vehicles on the roads results in both, air and noise pollution. The vehicles give out smoke which is directly inhaled by the people and this causes many diseases. The noise produced by automobiles and their blaring horns may gradually make people deaf. If this pollution is not checked in time, it will lead to greater health hazards to human beings. It can be checked to a great extent by planned and balanced industrialization. Urbanization should also be balanced. Industrial waste should be properly dumped and suitable chemicals should be used to destroy this waste and poisonous gases. Deforestation should be stopped and people should be encouraged to grow more and more trees in their neighborhoods.

आधुनिक मनुष्य भले ही जीवन के हर क्षेत्र में अपनी प्रगति पर गर्व कर रहा हो, लेकिन वह इसे बड़ी कीमत पर हासिल कर रहा है। जो ताजी हवा और शुद्ध पानी हमें मिलता था, वह अब प्रदूषित हो गया है। यह सब लापरवाही और लापरवाही के कारण हुआ है। कारखानों और उद्योगों की बढ़ती संख्या एक प्रमुख स्रोत है जो तीनों प्रकार के प्रदूषण, यानी जल, वायु और शोर का कारण बन रहा है। इन कारखानों के अपशिष्ट उत्पाद पाइपलाइनों के माध्यम से और अन्यथा नहरों और नदियों में चले जाते हैं, जिससे उनका पानी जहरीला और उपयोग के लिए अयोग्य हो जाता है। कारखानों की चिमनियों से निकलने वाला धुआँ हवा को खतरनाक गैसों से भर देता है और मशीनों और सायरन का शोर ध्वनि प्रदूषण पैदा करता है। पश्चिम के देश इस समस्या को गंभीरता से ले रहे हैं लेकिन भारत में इस समस्या से निपटने के लिए कोई ठोस कदम नहीं उठाया गया है। इन प्रदूषणों के हानिकारक प्रभाव आने वाली पीढ़ियों के लिए विनाशकारी सिद्ध होंगे। एक और मुख्य चीज जो प्रकृति का शोषण करती है और उसे प्रदूषित करती है, वह है पेड़ों को काटना। यह प्रत्यक्ष या अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से लगभग हर चीज को प्रभावित करता है। जब पेड़ नहीं होंगे तो मिट्टी को रखना संभव नहीं होगा। मिट्टी के कटाव के कारण उपजाऊ मिट्टी बारिश के पानी के साथ नीचे बह जाती है जिससे खेत बंजर हो जाते हैं। कम पेड़ों के परिणामस्वरूप कम फल और कम कागज उत्पाद होंगे और इसी तरह। पेड़ों द्वारा प्रकाश संश्लेषण कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड-ऑक्सीजन संतुलन को बनाए रखता है लेकिन पेड़ों को काटने के कारण जो हवा में सांस लेते हैं उसे प्रदूषित करते हैं। वनों की कटाई बारिश को गिरने से भी रोकती है और इससे कृषि उत्पादन प्रभावित होगा। खाद्य उत्पादन को बढ़ावा देने के लिए कृत्रिम उर्वरकों के उपयोग से भी हवा और पानी का प्रदूषण होता है। इससे खाद्य संदूषण भी होता है। प्रदूषण से जुड़ी एक और गंभीर समस्या है। हवा में क्लोरो-फ्लोरो-कार्बन की अधिकता से ओजोन परत का क्षरण होता है जो पृथ्वी को सूर्य की पराबैंगनी विकिरणों से बचाती है। सड़कों पर वाहनों की बढ़ती संख्या के परिणामस्वरूप वायु और ध्वनि प्रदूषण दोनों होते हैं। वाहनों से निकलने वाला धुआं लोगों के सीधे शरीर में जाता है और इससे कई बीमारियां होती हैं। ऑटोमोबाइल्स द्वारा उत्पन्न शोर और उनके तेज हॉर्न धीरे-धीरे लोगों को बहरा बना सकते हैं। यदि इस प्रदूषण पर समय रहते रोक नहीं लगाई गई तो यह मनुष्य के स्वास्थ्य के लिए अधिक खतरनाक होगा। नियोजित और संतुलित औद्योगीकरण द्वारा इसे काफी हद तक रोका जा सकता है। शहरीकरण भी संतुलित होना चाहिए। औद्योगिक कचरे को ठीक से डंप किया जाना चाहिए और इस कचरे और जहरीली गैसों को नष्ट करने के लिए उपयुक्त रसायनों का इस्तेमाल किया जाना चाहिए। वनों की कटाई को रोका जाना चाहिए और लोगों को अपने पड़ोस में अधिक से अधिक पेड़ लगाने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया जाना चाहिए।
