An Obedient Son
This is a tale of ancient times. There was a boy named Shravan Kumar. He was the only son of his parents. He loved his parents dearly and did everything to please them. Both of them were blind and had a great desire to go on a pilgrimage. Shravan Kumar looked after them with great care, because he loved them dearly. One day, his old parents told him, ” We would like to visit the holy places before we die. ” Shravan started thinking about how to fulfill the wish of his parents. They both were old, weak, and blind. Suddenly, an idea struck his mind. He made two strong baskets and put his parents in these baskets and carried them on his shoulders, by slinging these baskets on bamboo. On the way, his parents felt thirsty. They told Shravan to get them some water. Shravan placed the basket down and then went to a stream. As he put the pot into the water, the pot made a sound. King Dashratha, who had come for hunting in that forest, took out an arrow and shot it in the direction of the sound. His arrow pierced Shravan. Shravan gave a loud shriek. Then King Dasharath ran towards him. Shravan was lying on the ground. The king said, ” I didn’t mean to hit you. I thought it was a wild animal drinking water. I had come out on a hunt. ” ” Oh ! King, ” said Shravan, ” don’t worry about me. But please do take this water to my parents. They are thirsty and blind. They will die of thirst. ” Thus saying Shravan died. The king took the water to Shravan’s parents and said, ” I have brought the water for you. ” Then both of them said in one voice, ” Who are you? ” You are not our Shravan. Where is our Shravan? ” He told them what had happened. The old parents were unable to bear the shock of the death of their beloved son. They both fell and died of grief.
A Jackal is Always A Jackal
In the Gir forests of India once there lived a lion and lioness. They had two little cubs. The lion used to go hunting all most each day. One day he could not catch animals. He ran after several deers and zebras but they vanished under the dense lines of trees. The sun set as he wandered in the forest. Then he turned his way home. Suddenly, he found a baby Jackal. He did not attack it as he did not like to hunt small animals. But he thought what would lionesses and cubs eat? So he held it in his jaws. He took it alive to the lioness. The lioness asked him, ” why have you brought this baby Jackal alive? ” The lion replied, ” My dear, I caught nothing at all today. Except for this jackal child. But I did not kill it seeing that it is only a baby. Now, you may have it for your meat. I will bring something else The lioness said, ” My dear, you did not kill it, seeing that it is a baby. Then how can I kill it to satisfy my hunger? This we should never do in the lion’s race. So I adopt this baby Jackal as my third son. ” Saying this she put him to suckle milk at her breast. Now all three cubs used to spend their time playing together. They were not aware of the difference in their race. Gradually they started hunting small animals together. Once they saw a wandering lonely elephant. The lion cubs roared and said Let us hunt the Elephant. Saying this they charged forward furiously. But the little Jackal cried, ” this elephant is the enemy of our race. Do not go near him. ” Then he fled towards home. The lion cubs also lost heart at their brother’s flight. They laughed at the brother’s running away to see the elephant. Their father, the lion upbraided them with harsh words not to laugh at their brother. Even then the cub used furious words. Their lips were quivering and their eyes were flashing with high anger. Seeing the sight, the little Jackal rushed toward the cubs and shouted. The lioness understood the whole play. She thought A Jackal is always a Jackal. can not be like a lion. ” So she took the little Jackal aside and said, ” My child never shout at your brothers like this. ” But it was still enraged and cried, ” Am I less than them in bravery and learning? Then why do they make fun of me? Hearing that the lioness smiled. She wished the little Jackal to live. ” You are brave and learned too. But listen, my dear. You are the child of a Jackal. I have brought you upon my milk out of love. No Jackal kills an elephant ever. If my children know your race they may kill you. Before they know run quickly and join your kind. The jackal listened to the advice of the lioness and so it quickly fled away.

Aladdin and The Magic Lamp
Once upon a time, Aladdin was playing in the street. He was a very poor boy. One day he met a stranger. He said, ” Is it you, Aladdin? I am your father’s brother. I am your uncle. Take me to your house. I want to see your mother. ” He showed Aladdin some wonderful things. Aladdin took the stranger to his mother. He said, ” Good afternoon, madam. I must thank Aladdin for bringing me here. Here are fine dresses for you and Aladdin. ” Aladdin’s mother took the dresses and was very happy. The stranger was not Aladdin’s uncle. He was a bad man. Aladdin’s mother did not know this. Early the next morning the stranger took Aladdin to his house. They stayed there for 5 days. One morning he took him to a wonderful garden. There Aladdin got him some dry leaves and sticks. The man made a fire. He threw something like sand into it. At once the ground opened. The man said to Aladdin, ” Go down these steps. In the end, you will come to a fountain in a most beautiful garden. There you will find a little lamp burning. Put it out and bring the lamp to me. ” The man gave Aladdin his magic ring. Aladdin went down the hole and reached the garden. There he saw beautiful flowers and fruit made of gold and diamonds. Aladdin was surprised to see all that. He filled his pockets with gold and diamonds ) Then he put out the lamp in the fountain. He ran off with it. When he got to the top of the steps the old man said, ” Suddenly he heard a shout. ” Put out the flame of the lamp and bring me the lamp ! ” screamed the stranger. Aladdin said to him, ” First, pull me out of the hole. ” The man got angry and uttered some magic words. The mouth of the hole closed with a big stone. Aladdin sat on the steps and cried. By chance, he rubbed the magic Lamp. A genie stood before him. He said to Aladdin, ” I am the genie of Lamp. Tell me what you want .” “Take me out of this hole, please,” Aladdin said to his surprise. Aladdin found himself outside his house. He told his mother everything. She was very happy to have back with her.
Divine Punishment
A woodcutter and his wife were standing in the middle of the forest. It was afternoon time. The woodcutter was tired and hungry as he had been cutting logs of wood all through the morning He asked his wife to serve him lunch. Just then a lion came there. The woodcutter and his wife invited the lion to sit down by their side and eat their tasty food. The lion said that he was a meat eater, but he had enjoyed their food. The woodcutter’s wife was very happy to hear this. She asked the lion to come there every day and have food with them. The lion thanked the kind-hearted woodcutter and his wife and promised to come again. Thus daily the lion, the woodcutter, and his wife would have lunch together. In course of time, they became fast friends. Now the clever fox and the evil crow did not like this. They used to eat the meat left over by the lion every day. But for the last few days, the lion had been the guest of the woodcutter and his wife. One day, they asked the lion where he goes every afternoon. The lion told them that he goes to meet his friends, the woodcutter, and his wife. He had now almost given up eating meat. The kind couple serves food for him daily. The clever fox and the evil crow said that the woodcutter would surely kill you one day. Then they incited the lion to kill the woodcutter and his wife for the fox and the crow who used to eat the flesh left over by the lion. Now as the lion ate bread given by the woodcutter’s wife. So, he could not think of killing his human friends. One afternoon, as always, the lion went to have lunch with his friends. The fox and the crow quietly followed him. At that time a hunter had laid a trap. The fox, as he was following the lion, fell into the trap. The crow flew away. Thus, the lion remained a good friend of the woodcutter and his wife throughout his life.

The Shepherd And The Lion
Once, upon a time, there was a shepherd who lived in a village. Once when he was passing through the forest. Suddenly, he heard the roar of a lion. It was a cry of pain. When the lion roared again, the shepherd decided to approach the lion. He wanted to see if he could help the animal who seemed to be in trouble. At first, Shepherd couldn’t get the reason. He took courage and went to the lion. The lion was limping and groaning in severe pain. He saw that the lion had a thorn in his paw. The paw was swollen, causing him great pain and it was bleeding. The lion was very happy to see the shepherd approaching him. He raised the swollen paw towards the shepherd as if to say, ” I beg you. Please help me and relieve me from this terrible pain .” The kind shepherd felt pity for the lion in distress. Coming up to the lion, he held the swollen paw in his hands and examined it closely. He saw a big thorn stuck deep into the flesh. Using all his strength, he pulled the thorn out. The lion felt immediate relief from the pain. He licked the shepherd’s hand in gratitude and returned quietly to his home in the forest. The shepherd was happy about the fact that he had performed a good deed, and he also continued his journey. After some time, the shepherd was arrested and put into prison by the king on a false charge. He was condemned to be thrown to the hungry lion as punishment. The next morning, in the presence of the king and his courtiers he was brought to an arena. A fierce-looking lion was then released from a cage to devour him. When the shepherd saw the approaching, he closed his eyes in terror. But to his great surprise, the lion did not attack him. Instead, he came close to the shepherd and stood in front of him, looking fixedly at him. Next, he crouched at the shepherd’s feet and started licking the shepherd’s hand, affectionately. The shepherd opened his eyes and saw, to his great relief, that it was the same lion whom he had helped in the forest some days ago. The lion was now showing his gratitude to the man who had pulled out the thorn from his paw. The king was impressed with the shepherd and his friend. He ordered to release of both shepherd and the lion. Both friends were very happy.
Ashoka the Great
We see the Ashoka Chakra on the white band of our national flag. This has been taken from the Ashoka Pillar, Emperor Ashoka was the son of Bindusar, Chandragupta Maurya’s son. Ashoka built pillars, stupas, and sculptures of lions. Ashoka was a great king of India. He was fearless, brave, and a warrior since his childhood. He took in his possession the state of Magadha through his courage, wisdom, and bravery. During those days, to expand the kingdoms, kings would fight wars. Kalinga was not a part of his kingdom. So he attacked Kalinga with a huge army. He won the battle. Thousand of men and women’s children died in the war. This mass killing of people turned the life of Ashoka. He hated war. He considered offense even causing harm to living species. He became a follower of Buddha’s religion. Ashoka devoted himself to the good and welfare of human beings. He, in his kingdom: built hospitals for people and animals, dug up wells and tanks, spread messages of truth, non-violence, compassion, and love to all people, and curbed consuming meat in the royal kitchen completely. Ashoka built many Stupas. Among them, the Stupa of Sanchi is very famous. He got carved and engraved good teachings on pillars in many places. His teachings were: Have mercy on all species. Serve your parents. Respect your teachers. He became a Buddhist. He worked hard to spread the teaching of Buddha far and wide. In Sarnath, near Varanasi, we can see the beautiful Ashoka pillar with four lions on the top.
