आज हम PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE के बारे में जानेगे साथ ही इस Tense के Rules और Examples को समझकर Exercise को Solve करेंगे |

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
(INTRODUCTION)
Past Continuous Tense से यह ज्ञात होता है कि भूतकाल मे जो काम हो रहा था वो काम जारी था तथा समाप्त नहीं हुआ था |
पहचान-
Past Continuous Tense के वाक्यों की क्रिया के अंत मे ‘रहा था, रही थी, रहे थे’ आदि शब्द आते हैं | इस Tense के वाक्यों मे कार्य के जारी रहने का समय नहीं दिया होता है |
RULE OF TRANSLATION –
- Past Continuous Tense में I, He, She, It तथा Singular Nouns के साथ सहायक क्रिया (Helping Verb) Was का प्रयोग करके मुख्य क्रिया (Main Verb) की ing Form (Present Participle Form) का प्रयोग करते हैं |
- You, We, They तथा Plural Nouns के साथ सहायक क्रिया Were का प्रयोग करके मुख्य क्रिया की ing Form का प्रयोग कीजिये |
EXAMPLES –
- रमेश फूटबाल खेल रहा था |
Ramesh was playing football.
- सीता नाच रही थी |
Sita was dancing.
- वे बाजार जा रहे थे |
They were going to market.
TYPES OF PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
Past Continuous Tense को चार भागों मे बाँटते हैं जो निम्न प्रकार हैं –
- Affirmative (Positive) Sentences
- Negative Sentences
- Interrogative Sentences
- Negative Interrogative Sentences
AFFIRMATIVE (Positive) SENTENCES
Affirmative Sentences को Positive Sentences भी कहते हैं | इन वाक्यों के अंत मे ‘रहा था, रही थी, रहे थे’ आदि शब्द आते हैं
RULE OF TRANSLATION –
Subject + Helping Verb (was,were) + Main Verb (ing) + Object
EXAMPLES OF AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES –
- वह अपने कपड़े धो रही थी |
She was washing her clothes.
- कल वर्षा हो रही थी |
It was raining yesterday.
- तुम कल चोर को पीट रहे थे |
You were beating the thief.
- वे परीक्षा मे नकल कर रहे थे |
They were cheating in the examination.
- मैं कल गंगा जी मे स्नान कर रह था |
I was bathing in the Ganga yesterday.
- हम अपना पाठ याद कर रहे थे |
We were learning our lesson.
- ये लड़कियाँ पौधों मे पानी लगा रहीं थी |
These girls were watering in the plant.
- वे लड़के सड़क पर दौड़ रहे थे |
Those boys were running on the road.
NEGATIVE SENTENCES
Negative Sentences से हमे यह ज्ञात होता है कि वाक्य मे जिस कार्य की बात हो रही थी वो जारी नहीं था |
RULE OF TRANSLATION –
Subject + Helping Verb (was,were) + Not + Main Verb (ing) + Object
EXAMPLES OF NEGATIVE SENTENCES –
- हम अपना पाठ याद नहीं कर रहे थे |
We were not learning our lesson.
- किसान खेत नहीं जोत रहा था |
The farmer was not ploughing the field.
- कुछ लड़के अपना कम नहीं कर रहे थे |
Some boys were not doing their work.
- ये लड़कियां कमरे मे डांस नहीं कर रही थी |
These girls were not dancing in the room.
- वे बच्चे कल अपना होमवर्क नहीं कर रहे थे |
Those children were not doing their homework.
- माताजी आम नहीं खा रहीं थीं |
Mother was not eating mangoes.
- पिताजी बाजार नहीं जा रहे थे |
Father was not going to market.
- चपरासी घंटी नहीं बजा रहा था |
The peon was not ringing the bell.
INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES
Interrogative Sentences मे प्रश्नसूचक शब्द (क्या, कहाँ, कौन, क्यों आदि) आते हैं | ये Tense दो प्रकार के होते हैं –
1. First Type (‘क्या’ से आरंभ होने वाले वाक्य)
RULE OF TRANSLATION –
Helping Verb (was,were) + Subject + Main Verb (ing) + Object
EXAMPLES OF INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES (First Type) –
- क्या गीता कपड़े धो रही था ?
Was Gita washing the clothes?
- क्या सोहन क्रिकेट खेल रहा था ?
Was Sohan playing the cricket?
- क्या चपरासी घंटी बजा रहा था ?
Was the peon ringing the bell?
- क्या तुम स्टेशन जा रहे थे ?
Were you going to station?
- क्या ये लड़कियां अपना होमवर्क कर रहीं थीं ?
Were these girls doing their homework?
- क्या वे लड़के आम खा रहे थे ?
Were those boys eating mangoes?
- क्या बच्चे यहाँ पढ़ रहे थे ?
Were children reading here?
- क्या कल मास्टर साहब तुम्हें पीट रहे थे ?
Was teacher beating you yesterday?
2. Second Type (वाक्य के बीच मे प्रश्नसूचक शब्द वाले वाक्य)
RULE OF TRANSLATION –
(WH) + Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object
EXAMPLES OF INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES (Second Type) –
- आज तुम क्या खा रहे थे ?
What were you eating today?
- कल तुम्हें कौन पढ़ा रहा था ?
Who was teaching you yesterday?
- राम किसे पीट रहा था ?
Whom was Ram beating?
- रश्मि कहाँ सो रही थी ?
Where was Rashmi sleeping?
- बच्चे क्यों चिल्ला रहे थे ?
Why were children shouting?
- ये लड़के कौन सी किताब पढ़ रहे थे ?
Which book were these boys reading?
- मास्टर साहब कौन सा विषय पढ़ा रहे थे ?
What subject was teacher teaching?
- राजेश दिल्ली से कब आ रहा था ?
When was Rajesh coming from Delhi?
NOTE – जिन वाक्यों का उत्तर हम ‘हाँ’ या ‘नहीं’ में दे सकते हैं तो उस वाक्य को First Type के अनुसार translate करेंगे |
जिन वाक्यों का उत्तर हम हाँ या नहीं में नहीं दे सकते बल्कि उसका उत्तर देने के लिए कोई बात कहनी होगी तो उसे Second Type के अनुसार translate करना होगा |
NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES
इन Sentences में प्रश्नसूचक शब्द के साथ ‘नहीं’ का भी प्रयोग होता है |
RULE OF TRANSLATION –
(WH) + Helping Verb + Subject + Not + Main Verb + Object
EXAMPLES OF NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES –
- क्या कल मोहन यहाँ नहीं पढ़ रहा था ?
Was Mohan not reading here yesterday?
- ये लड़के इतिहास क्यों नहीं याद कर रहे थे ?
Why were these boys not learning History?
- क्या यह लड़की कल अपना निबंध पूरा नहीं कर रही थी ?
Was this girl not completing her essay yesterday?
- कल तुम स्कूल क्यों नहीं जा रहे थे ?
Why were you not going to school yesterday?
- मजदूरों की मजदूरी कौन नहीं दे रहा था ?
Who was not paying the wages of laborers?
EXERCISE OF PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE –
- चिड़ियाँ खुले मैदान में चहक रहीं थीं |
Birds were chirping in the open field.
- मैं स्टेशन पर तुम्हारा इंतेजार कर रहा था |
I was waiting for you at the station.
- कल हम अपने मित्रों की सहायता कर रहे थे |
We were helping our friends yesterday.
- शिकारी हिरन के पीछे नहीं दौड़ रहा था |
Hunter was not running after deer.
- कल राजू फूटबाल नहीं खेल रहा था |
Raju was not playing football yesterday.
- कल लड़कियां पौधों में पानी क्यों नहीं लगा रहीं थीं ?
Why were the girls not watering in plants yesterday?
- कौन सा लड़का दौड़ में भाग नहीं ले रहा था ?
Which boys was not participating in the race?
- क्या तुम कल आम नहीं खा रहे थे ?
Were you not eating mango yesterday?
- क्या तुम्हारी माताजी गीता पढ़ रहीं थीं ?
Was your mother reading the Gita?
- तुम कौन सी पुस्तक पुस्तकालय में पढ़ रहे थे ?
Which book were you reading in the library?
